Sustainability

Climate change is a reality, the scientific community has long been warning of this risk, but now and especially after the phenomena of this summer, heat memories in many parts of Europe, huge forest fires in Turkey and Greece, floods in Belgium and Germany, it seems that we are realizing that the apocalyptic forecasts of scientists are being fulfilled.

Sustainability

Intro

The main cause of climate change is greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, which include CO2 emissions or equivalent emissions, including other greenhouse gases such as nitrogen or fluorinated gases used in refrigeration. This is why there are emission reduction targets for 2030 and neutralization, i.e. zero emissions by 2050. Industry in general is one of the main causes of emissions, both in terms of its energy consumption, in its heat sources, and in the chemical reactions that take place and directly generate GHGs.

There is no culture regarding what emits and what does not emit, we are not aware that every step we take involves the consumption of fossil fuels and therefore GHG emissions and it is necessary to start involving everyone in this process. That is why Klinea must start raising awareness and disseminating information, which must then be transformed into application on the projects it carries out, providing technical solutions to its customers, appropriate to their needs, but free of GHG. We know from the outset that we will not change the chemical processes, they are for making medicines and that requires great efforts in homologation and approval, but we can make the auxiliary equipment and machinery more generally, is adequate in order to reduce GHG emissions.

Klinea, with this strategy, should place itself in a leading position, since no one else in the sector is starting to see things this way and when customers ask for it, which they will because they will be forced to, Klinea will already have experience and knowledge.

In order to calculate the emissions in a production process or in a project or facility, we must make a calculation based on what we consume and apply to each thing its emissions, a kind of state of measurements, but to calculate emissions. That is why it is necessary to have databases that relate each thing we do or plan to do and the emissions it generates. Currently, this information is not very extensive and this will make the calculations very approximate, but it is a first step. We will be able to do it correctly for buildings, structures, envelopes, lighting, but it will be very difficult in this first phase to do it for installations and machinery. We must wait for the manufacturers to inform us of the emissions generated in the manufacture of a particular machine.

This makes that in a first phase, perhaps it is more interesting to offer the calculation of emissions of a project in those that have an important part of architecture, an element to add and that can add value and facilitated that the client can make it visible is to offer a LEED certification, the most basic.

Another proposal that can be made is to study and calculate the emissions of a specific process and provide improvement points in terms of GHG and costs on the other hand. So that the client can see what can be done quickly and with little investment. Cost/performance ratio. These studies can be the origin of process reform and Klinea projects, i.e. it would be to offer a low cost service for the calculation of emissions that can then report interesting projects for Klinea in the line of emissions reduction.

Conclusiones

  1. Interviews with trusted customers to see how they would accept this proposal in order to refine it and refine what is offered.
  2. Definition of the proposals in provisional status, as projects are made, they can be fine-tuned.
  3. Publication on the web of the proposals, without too much detail, this will be done in detail in the offers, but first we must specify them.
